Web Site Traffic Analysis
Everyone is curious about how many people visit their web site. There
are numerous types of information about the traffic on your website
that is available provided appropriate log files are kept. When
clients choose to participate in one of our SEO programs, we
automatically include a detailed analysis of their site log file. The
resulting reports are very important to us in keeping your site
optimized, but they are also of tremendous value to you, our client. The
reports provide crucial information about what visitors are coming to
your site to see.
The Myth of 'Hits'
The term 'hits' or 'total hits' is one that causes great confusion with
most internet users and web site owners. In fact, the only people to
whom 'hits' are important are webmasters who are managing the traffic to
their machines. To the rest of us, they have little practical meaning.
When a domain name or URL is typed into an address bar, or a link is
clicked on a search results page, the action that occurs is referred to
as a request to a web server. From the server side, this is know as a
hit.
A hit is a request to a server, from a browser for a file. Any web page
may include linked files, images as well as the overarching page which is
displayed to the browser as a whole. Each of the linked files, images as
well as the page requested are hits. If there are a dozen linked files
and a dozen images on a page, the total hits for this request is 25. For
this reason, we do not consider the number of hits information in our
traffic analysis or in our SEO work. For clients who have Monthly
Maintenance
Agreements, we automatically inform you once per month of the total hits
for the period. It is not
included in the analysis reports we prepare, but is available on request.
Free Monthly Analysis Reports
As a participant in one of our Search Engine Optimization programs, we
include at no charge, a report of our monthly analysis of your web site traffic.
Using this information, you can identify which areas of your web site
are receiving the most significant amounts of traffic.
What items are included in the report?
- Total number of page requests for a monthly period
- Critical or highly visited pages will be tracked individually
- Groups of similar information will be tracked individually but
reported as a segment
- Comparison with the previous period
- Year end comparison including noticeable trends
- Source of people visiting the site
We will help
you determine how to best utilize the information in the reports to enhance your web
site value to it's visitors.
This information is also critical in keeping search engine relevance at
an optimum level. By using the data gathered, we can learn where to
make modifications that will increase or maintain current standings.
